American Pika (Ochotona princeps) — Conservation Concept Art & Character Design

This project presents a series of concept watercolor illustrations created for @commonwonders.art to visualize a future mosaic sculpture of the American Pika (Ochotona princeps), named "Lucky." The artwork highlights the charm, resilience, and ecological significance of this alpine creature through detailed traditional techniques.
Concept & Storytelling
The American Pika is a tiny, climate-sensitive mountain inhabitant known for its industrious habit of collecting and curing alpine vegetation into "haypiles" for survival through cold winters. As rising temperatures continue to alter high-altitude ecosystems, these resilient animals face growing threats to their habitats. The design captures Lucky perched atop geometric rock formations, carrying a vibrant bouquet of mountain flora, symbolizing both her hardworking nature and the fragile beauty of alpine wildlife.
